The High Cost of Crisis If you have not a chosen a crisis management system, or if you are currently utilizing an ineffective system, you are likely to encounter the following problems... Breakdown of Treatment and/or Educational Programs If crisis behaviors such as aggression, self-injury, and high-magnitude disruption are not contained and managed effectively, an immediate breakdown in ongoing facility wide programs and objectives is likely to occur. Increased Aggressive Behavior Over time, if crisis behaviors are not contained and managed properly, they are likely to increase dramatically. Crisis behaviors rarely just "go away" on their own. On the contrary, when aggression and disruption are not handled properly, they are likely to occur more often. Increased Risk of Injury To Students, Clients, Teachers and Therapists When crisis behaviors are not contained, they can result in serious injury to the person exhibiting the behavior and to other staff/personnel in the environment. Continued failure, to deal effectively with crisis behaviors, ultimately leads to a highly dangerous and stressful teaching, treatment, or work environment. Teacher/Therapist Burnout, Low Morale, Absenteeism, and Turnover When educational or treatment goals cannot be achieved or met, and when the work environment is viewed as stressful and dangerous by personnel, a marked decrease in staff morale, and an increase in staff burnout, absenteeism and turnover are likely to occur. Increased Risk of Litigation Due to Negligence or Incompetence Administrators, teachers and therapists may be held personally liable if crisis situations are handled improperly or if there is a failure to act when action is clearly called for in order to ensure safety. Relative to a single successful or even unsuccessful lawsuit, the cost of training individuals in crisis management is negligible. |
